On 6th June, 1916, 12th Rifle Brigade of 60 Brigade, 20th Division were holding the line at Hooge in the Ypres salient when there was a large scale German attack against the junction of 59 and 60 Brigades and the trenches held by the Canadians. 12th Rifle Brigade had manned the parapet and were ready despite the explosion of a mine which had destroyed 50 yards of trench at Gully Farm completely burying thirty men of A Company. Reinforcements rushed up to take the crater and all but two were dug out alive, but the effort of defending against this attack resulted in a number of casualties, including Benjamin Poole, who was killed in action.
